The UNWTO ties in with the motives for travel. Therefore, genealogy tourists can be defined as follows:

“Genealogy tourists are people who travel to the ancestral sites of their ancestors to learn more about their family history and stay there for no longer than a year.”

At the time of writing this page there is no entry on the german pages. But very well in the English Wikipediaportal. There it says among other things:

“Genealogy tourism is a worldwide industry, although it is more prominent in countries that have experienced mass emigration at some time in history and thus have a large worldwide Diaspora community.”

Ireland was well-known to genealogy tourists for its campaign to the Americans, and in 2000, for example, welcomed over 100,000 genealogy tourists. The most prominent Austrian genealogy traveler was probably Udo Jürgens, who traveled to Russia in 2010 and received a statue there, which he got from his grandfather. The family history of Udo Jürgens was also filmed under the title: “The man with the bassoon.”
